Carol Theresa East also known as Sister Carol is one of Jamaica’s foundation Reggae/Dancehall artist who was encouraged by Brigadier Jerry to try chatting in Jamaican dancehall style rather than singing. Sister Carol originated from Denham Town in West Kingston and migrated to the United States at age 14 with her family. Her father Howard East, was a Senior Engineer at Radio Jamaica (RJR) and his affiliation at the famous Studio One would influence Carol early interest in music.
Sister Carol is also an actress who made appearances in the Jonathan Demme movie, Something Wild in 1986, Married to the Mob 1988 and Rachel Getting Married 2008. Sister Carol released her first album entitled Liberation for Africa in 1983 and in 1984, Black Cinderella which launched her. She went on to formd her own record label of the same name, a name that stuck with her as she also uses it as a stage name along with Mother Culture which fans also refer to her as.
But that was then fast forward to now, and Black Cinderella still reigns. In the Tri-Stars Pictures, “Ricki and the Flash” with lead role played by three time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep and opened in theatres across the United States two weeks ago, the voice of the cultural griot, Sister Carol sounded lyrics from her 1996 Grammy nominated single, “Milk and Honey” off the Lyrically Potent album close out the film before the credits roll.
Sister Carol explain to Caribbean Life how she was approached, “they first wanted me to be a TSA agent but I don’t wear pants so that was it for me.” But then, she was asked to portray a couple with husband/manager Dean Wauchope. Her line did not make the director’s cut but her music sure did. Since 1986, Sister Carol has had film forays with Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married, Denzil Washington in Mighty Quinn, Michelle Phiffer and Alex Baldwin in Married To The Mob and Melanie Griffith in Something Wild.
Sister Carol’s music has made soundtracks for the movies she played. As for Carol, “I am thankful to the Divine Creator…”
