Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin has long had an affinity for retro sounds — after all, her breakout performance on season five of The voice (which she eventually won) was a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Now, Chin returns to the 70’s with her throwback track “Fire,” classic-sounding RnB tune that showcases her undeniable voice. “It’s a soulful power anthem and a reminder to never sell yourself short, ” Chin tells Billboard “to keep your standards high as well as your self-worth.”
“The whole experience of creating and writing this song was just so organic and real,” Chin continues. “It took me back to the music and an era that I absolutely love and respect.”
Going back to basics was one of Chin’s favourite parts of writing and recording “Fire.” “We were all in a live room clapping and stomping our heels around a mic to the beat to add that extra bit of realness to it,” she says. “It was so much fun.”
