Marion “Lady Saw” Hall |
Dubbed Queen of Dancehall, Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall will write history once more in her career as the first female artiste of the genre to close out the highly anticipated night of the annual, 23rd staging of Reggae Sumfest show; one of Jamaica’s biggest, longstanding Reggae/Dancehall festivals.
“I am so excited about this” Saw told the Jamaica Observer, “It is a magical night. Don’t expect the Jazz and Blues type of thing” she warned. The colourful Dancehall artiste who turns 46 on July 12 began her illustrious career at age 15. The name “Lady Saw“ became household to many Dancehall fans upon the release of a raunchy song entitled, “Stab Up De Meat” in the early 90s, but it was another track called “Hardcore” released in 1994 that brought her to the fore. She went on to record even more tracks including duets with the likes of Dancehall and Reggae icons such as, Beenie Man, Luciano, Dennis Brown, Bounty Killer and Beres Hammond.
In 1999 Lady Saw landed a major hit with a song called “Smile” which peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as hit major charts in New Zealand and Canada and certified ‘Gold’ with over 500,000 sales.
In 2002, Saw collaborated with American Rock band No Doubt on their platinum selling hit “Underneath It All.” She received a triple-platinum certification from the R.I.A.A. and a Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo or Group.
Lady Saw in an interview on local television, said she is in preparation mood for the show and promises an exciting set. She follows in the footsteps of Dancehall giants such as Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and for two years in a row, I-Octane. A grand performance on this special night will prove why she wears the ‘Queen of Dancehall’ crown; closing out Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest, Thursday July 16, 2015 at Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex, Montego Bay, is said to be a hard task but for a confident Lady Saw, “All I need is 30 minutes…30 minutes of fire…” she told Winford Williams in an interview on CVM television.
