Nominations for the 57th annual Grammy Awards were announced by The Recording Academy reflecting an eclectic mix of the best and brightest in music over the past year, as determined by The Academy’s voting members the Grammy website reports. Nominees for Best Reggae Album are:-
Ziggy Marley’s Fly Rasta, Shaggy Out of Many, One Music, Sean Paul Full Frequency, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry Back on the Controls, Sly and Robbie and Spicy Chocolate The Reggae Power and SOJA’s Amid the Noise and the Haste.
With Ziggy Marley among the list of nominees, winning would make him a 7 time recipient of the prestigious award and the only Reggae artiste to win a Grammy ‘2 years in a row.’ His first time winning the Grammy back to back was in 1988 and 89 with the Melody Makers for albums Conscious Party and One Bright Day. Ziggy Marley went on to win again in 1997 with album Fallen is Babylon, 2006 Love is My Religion and 2013 Ziggy Marley In Concert. The Marleys have won 10 Grammys collectively to date. Steven Marley has won the award twice for the same album. In 2007, Steven won the Grammy for his album Mind Control (Acoustic) and won again in 2009 for Mind Control.
Shaggy won his first Grammy in 1996 for his platinum selling album Boombastic and has been nominated 5 times for a Grammy Award. Sean Paul also won a Grammy in 2004 for the album Dutty Rock with an overall 4 times nomination for a Grammy. Sly and Robbie have also won themselves a Grammy in 1999 for the album Friends. Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry copped the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album leaving SOJA as the first time nominee. SOJA is an American reggae and dub band based in Arlington, Virginia. Their album, Amid the Noise and the Haste features Damian Marley, J. Boog and Collie Buddz and has topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
The Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles, February 8, 2015.
