“How important are ‘music video views?’
Many people have become well-known, or even famous, because of their YouTube videos. The most viewed video of all time is the 2012 single “Gangnam Style” by Korean singer-songwriter Psy, which has been viewed over 2 billion times.
Psy entered the Korean music industry in 1999 and is known domestically for his humorous videos and stage performances. In December 2012, MTV noted Psy’s rise from little-known outside of South Korea to “global superstar”, and, for being first in YouTube-era to secure a place in pop-culture history. Psy was also hailed the “Viral Star of 2012” and his follow up single, Gentleman (#9 on the most viewed videos list) has received over 800 million views as of 2015.
Soooo, ‘music video views’ are very important which is why we have been looking at how some Jamaican artistes ‘music video views’ is doing. Many have pass the million mark so we wanted to know how many have hit 5 million views and more between 2014 and 2015. Well here is what we come up with.
1) In 6 months, platinum status, Grammy winning artist Shaggy has wreaked a whopping 22 million and counting views for his “I Need Your Love” video featuring Mohombi and Faydee
2) From Popcaan’s début album “Where We Come From” release in 2014, the video for popular single, “Everything Nice” has garnered over 8 million views to date
3) One year and four months after its release, Dancehall artiste Spice “Boom Boom” music video swells to an impressive 17 million YouTube views. But because we are checking for videos within the year, Spice most watched video would be “Conjugal Visit” featuring Vybz Kartel now raking in 6 million views so far.
4) Next in line is Protoje scoring 6.3 million with the timeless “Who Knows” video featuring Chronixx
5) Another video scoring over 6 mil views is Stephen Marley’s “Rock Stone” featuring Capleton and Sizzla. The video was uploaded to StephenMarleyVEVO August 2014 and currently receiving 6.5 million views.
